The Teacher-Heart
There is a unique joy in teaching, a deep fulfilment that comes from guiding young minds toward their future. Reflecting on my own journey, I cherish my parents and great teachers who encouraged, drove, corrected, and brought out the best in me from primary school to this day. Many of them have inspired my passion for teaching. My heart has always been with my students, helping shape their journey as they evolve into the medical professionals they aspire to be. Currently, I am away from their classroom floor and immersed in personal upskilling. Despite the importance of this time, I miss my students and the vibrant energy of our shared learning experiences.
Teaching
is more than a profession; it’s a calling that resonates deeply within me. I
miss the moments in class, when my students arrive at answers, their faces
lighting up with the joy of discovery. Those flashes of understanding, when
their eyes widen with curiosity when we discuss clinical case scenarios, are
irreplaceable. It’s in these instances that I see their transformation, their
journey from learners to confident practitioners. It gives me hope for the future of Medicine.
Naturally,
the classroom comes with its challenges. Sometimes, a truant student will
stroll in late, unprepared, and oblivious of the ongoing discussion. After about
15 minutes, I'll ask them a question, often resulting in responses that make
the entire class burst into laughter. I recall one instance at the end of a
lecture on anemia. I asked, "So, what symptoms of anaemia you've
learned about today?" The latecomer confidently stood up, trying to mask his
regret, and said, "Turningness of the eyes, Ma'am." My goodness! That
was a new phrase! I advised him to come early next time and pay attention with
both his head and heart. These moments, while frustrating, are also integral to
the teaching experience. They highlight the diverse personalities in the
classroom, each on their own unique journey of understanding and growth.
I
miss the opportunity to guide those who have worked tirelessly, holding their
hands as they cross the threshold to the next level of their academic journey.
Watching them succeed is a reward beyond measure, a testament to their
dedication and my commitment as their mentor. As they move forward, I wish them
great success, confident that they will carry the lessons we’ve shared into
their future learnings and practice. And
like we say in Naija - Please don’t fall my hand.
Being away from the classroom floor has deepened my appreciation for the profound impact of teaching. My Teacher-Heart still beats strongly, and thank God for the positives of COVID-19, we can meet virtually. This allows me to remain part of my students' incredible journeys and the journeys of many others around the world. Whether onsite or online, I send every student my best wishes as we continue our shared path of learning and discovery.
